Outgoing Homelessness NSW CEO Trina Jones has been appointed NSW’s first NSW Rental Commissioner.

Starting in the role on the 7th August, Jones brings more than a decade of experience spanning policy, research and advocacy.

As Jones said on the appointment, her mission will be to amplify the voice of renters, helping the strengthen their rights and improve the fairness of the rental market.

“There are two million renters in our state and 36 per cent of them are in rental stress, with many at risk of homelessness,” she said.

“I look forward to working closely and productively with government, industry and renters across our state as we collaboratively search for solutions to our housing challenges.”

Homelessness NSW said Jones has a track record for building collective impact responses to ending homelessness. She led the development of the Sydney 10-year Homelessness Action Plan, the Emergency Response Protocol for People Sleeping Rough and Homelessness Assertive Response Team (HART), which led to long-term housing and support outcomes for people experiencing homelessness.

“We are sad to see Trina leave, but with more than 15 years of experience in local government, housing and homelessness – including recent success in shaping the rental fairness bill – she is the perfect fit for this role,” said Homelessness NSW Board Chair David Fisher.

“We wish Trina every success and look forward to working with her as the first Rental Commissioner where she will continue making a positive impact on the state.”

Amy Hains has been appointed the Acting CEO of Homelessness NSW, saying she looks forward to supporting the team, board and sector to “ensure everyone has a safe home and the support to keep it.”
